The Amanitaceae is a family of gilled mushrooms comprising about 2 genera and 600+ species. They are distributed worldwide and include some of the most beautiful mushrooms as well as the most deadly poisonous species. The genus Amanita contains both the iconic fly agaric and the lethal death cap.

Key Identifying Features

  • Volva: Universal veil remnants at stem base (cup-like or scaly)
  • Cap: Often with warts or patches from universal veil
  • Gills: Usually white to cream, free or narrowly attached
  • Ring (annulus): Often present, sometimes fragile or absent
  • Spore print: White
  • Warning: Many species are deadly poisonous, including A. phalloides (death cap)
