The Boletaceae is a family of pored mushrooms comprising about 28 genera and 800+ species. They are distributed worldwide and include many prized edible species as well as some poisonous ones. Boletes form ectomycorrhizal relationships with trees and are important forest symbionts.
Key Identifying Features
- Pores: Sponge-like layer of tubes instead of gills on cap underside
- Stem: Usually thick and robust, often with network pattern (reticulation)
- Flesh: Often bruising blue or red when cut or damaged
- Spore print: Variable; olive-brown, yellow-brown, or reddish-brown
- Mycorrhizal: Associated with specific trees (oak, pine, birch, etc.)
