Identifying Features
- Habit: Large evergreen trees with spreading, layered branches

- Bark: Dark gray, deeply fissured and scaly with age
- Cones: Large, barrel-shaped, erect on branches, disintegrating at maturity
- Distinguishing: Clustered needles; cones break apart on tree (like Abies)
